Guernsey, the most westerly, and in point of size
the second of the Channel Islands; situated in the Bay
of St Michael in the Gulf of Avranches at the entrance
to the English Channel, 68 miles S. of Weymouth, 81
SE. of Plymouth, and 108 SW. of Southampton; on
the French side the island is 42 m. SW. of Cherbourg ;
it is 9 m. long and 5 m. wide ; 16,005 ac., pop. 32,607 ;
P.O., T.O., 2 Banks. On the coast the scenery of
Guernsey is very impressive, but the interior is flat and
thinly wooded. Commerce is represented chiefly by
the working of the granite quarries, which supply excel-
lent road material. There are very fair fisheries, and
a little shipbuilding. (For shipping statistics, see Ap-
pendix. ) Cows are reared for the English markets, and
a profitable trade exists in the exportation of grapes,
pears, and other fruits. St Peter Port in the SE. is the
chief town. There are fixed lights (Guernsey Island),
seen 3 and 9 miles respectively, at the old and new
harbours of St Peter Port, and a revolving light
(Guernsey Island) is displayed on SW. rock of Hanois,
or Hanoveaux, seen 12 miles.

Guestling.—hundred, Hastings rape, E. Sussex,
10,930 ac., pop. 2082 ; contains 4 pars.—2. Guestling,
par. and vil., E. Sussex, 34 miles NE. of Hastings, 3578
ac., pop. 802; P.O., called Guestling Green.

Guestwick, par. and ry. sta., N. Norfolk, 4 miles
S. of Melton Constable sta., 1646 ac., pop. 183; P.O.;
birthplace of Godwin (1756-1836) the novelist.

Gugglcby Stone, in SAY. vicinity of Shap, Westmor-
' land ; is 8 ft. high and 18 in circumference.
