Mnlkcar, river ; rises in the Keeper Mountains, N.
co. Tipperary, and flows SAY. past Newport through co.
Limerick to Barrington’s Bridge, thence NAA7. to river
Shannon 4 miles above Limerick city ; length, 32 miles.

Mull, island, NAY. Argyllshire, separated from the
mainland by the Sound of Mull and the Firth of Lorne,
7 miles AY. of Oban, 224,802 ac., pop. 5229 ; measures
in extreme length and breadth 29 and 30 miles, being
the third largest of the AYestern Islands, and has a
rugged and irregular coast, with a great number of
smaller islands on the AY. The climate is in general
wet and stormy. The surface is mountainous, attain-
ing in Ben More an alt. of 3185 ft. There are some
verdant or cultivated spots at the heads of the various
sea-lochs or inlets. The prevailing rock is trap ; red
granite is quarried in the SAY. on the peninsula called
the Ross of Mull. Fresh-water lochs are numerous.
Tobermory, in the NAY., is the only town.

Mull, Sound of, between Mnll island and Morvern,
Argyllshire; is from 14 mile to 3J miles wide, and has
beautiful and varied scenery along its shores ; on Runa
Gal rock, 50 yards seaward of high-water mark and 1|
mile N. of Tobermory, is Mnll Sound Lighthouse,
63 ft. high, with fixed light 55 ft. above high water
and seen 12 miles.
