Soke, The (or East and West Soke), liberty, Hants,
adjacent to Winchester, 50 ac., pop. 7 ; prior to 1881 it
was much more extensive, and comprised part of Win-
chester city.

Soken, The, district, in NE. of Essex, comprising
the pars, of Kirby le Soken, Thorpe le Soken, and
Walton le Soken.

Solent, The, channel, separating the NW. shore of
the Isle of Wight from the mainland of Hants, and ex-
tending between The Needles and West Cowes, with a
width varying from 2 to 5 miles ; the navigation is rather
intricate, but the Solent affords a safe and well-sheltered
anchorage.

Solva (or Solfach), seaport vil., Whitchurch by
Haverfordwest par., Pembrokeshire, on creek of St
Brides Bay, 3 miles E. of St Davids; P.O., T.O., 1
newspaper; has some coasting trade.

Solway Firth, arm of the Irish Sea, bounded by the
counties of Kirkcudbright, Dumfries, and Cumberland;
extends inland in a NE. direction 40 miles, with a
breadth diminishing from 20 miles to 2 miles. It re-
ceives the Urr, Nith, Annan, Esk, Eden, Wampool,
Weaver, Ellen, and Derwent. The Solway is to a great
extent occupied by broad sands, dry at low water, and is
remarkable for the rapidity with which its tides ebb and
flow. It abounds with fish, including salmon. The
Solway Hail way Viaduct (opened in 1869, reopened
to traffic in 1884), between Bowness, Cumberland, and
Annan, Dumfriesshire, is 1960 yards long, with banks
from the English and Scottish shores 440 and 154 yards
long.

Soiway Eight-Vessel, Robin Rigg Channel, Solway
Firth, 7% m. SW. of Silloth; has fixed light seen 6 m.

Solway Moss, tract, Kirk Andrews upon Esk par.,
Cumberland, 7 miles in circumference and lying AV. of
Longtown, on the Border; here the Scottish army
under James V. was defeated by the English in 1542.
