Wednesday. The par. contains the townships of East
Tadcaster and West Tadcaster—East Tadcaster, 580
ac., pop. 869; West Tadcaster, 1497 ac., pop. 1660.
Tadcaster occupies the site of the Roman Calcaria, and
has yielded many Roman coins; it had anciently a
castle, out of the ruins of which the handsome bridge
over the Wharfe was built; it figures in history in
connection with the battle of Towton (1461), and with
several affairs which occurred during the Civil War.
The trade is unimportant.

Taddington.—eccl. dist., township, and mining vil.,
Bakewell par., Derbyshire, 5½ miles NW. of Bakewell
—dist., pop. 486; township (Taddington and Priest-
cliff), 3008 ac., pop. 408; P.O.; Taddington lays claim
to being the highest village in England; in the church¬
yard is an ancient cross, said to be the work of the
monks of Lindisfarne.—2. Taddington, hamlet, Stan¬
way par., Gloucestershire, 4 miles NE. of Winchcomb.

Taf (or Tave), river, Pembrokeshire and Carmarthen¬
shire ; rises on Mynydd Preseley, and flows 25 miles
SE. past Whitland, St Clears, and Laugharne to Car-
marthenbay, at the influx of the Towy.

Taff, river, Brecon and Glamorgan; rises in 2 head-
streams on the Brecknock Beacons, and flows 40 miles
SE. past Merthyr Tydfil, Quaker’s Yard, Pontypridd,
and Llandaff, to the Bristol Channel at Cardiff harbour.
