Bute, island, in Firth of Clyde, separated from Argyll- shire by Kyles of Bute, a narrow channel less than 1 mile wide. It is distant 5 miles from the Ayrshire coast and 6 miles from Arran; is 16 miles long, and from 3 miles to 5 miles broad; area (including Inchmarnock), 31,8364 ac>> P°P* 10,998. The coast is rocky, and in the interior are several small lochs, the principal of which are Lochs Fad and Ascog. The soil is light and gravelly, but produces excellent crops. There is no lack of soft red sandstone, slate, and whinstone, while grey granite is also found. The island is celebrated for its salubrious climate, which makes it a favourite resort of invalids. Rothesay, a fashionable watering-place, is the chief town; 4 miles
S. is Mountstuart, a seat of the Marquis of Bute.

Buteshire, an insular co. of Scotland, comprising the islands of Bute, Arran, the Great and Little Cumbraes, Holy Isle, Inchmarnock, and Pladda, in Firth of Clyde. 139,440 ac., pop. 17,657. The principal industries are agriculture and the fisheries. (For agricultural statistics, see Appendix.) The co. comprises 6 pars, and a part, and the police burghs of Millport and Rothesay. It returns 1 member to Parliament.
