Charleville.—market town, Rathgoggan par., N.

and Saturday. The town is situated 1 mile W.
of the ry. sta., in a rich and fertile district, on a small
stream called the Glynn. It owes its rise to the first
Earl of Orrery, who in honour of Charles II. changed
its name of Rathgoggan to Charleville ; the same noble¬
man founded and. endowed a school here. C. gave his
title to the Earl of Charleville until 1875, when, on the
death of the fifth Earl, the title became extinct.—2.
