Cliiltern Hills, range of chalk hills, extending NE.
from vicinity of river Thames, in S. of Oxfordshire,
through Bucks and Bedfordshire, and N. part of Herts,
to the border of Suffolk, with a breadth varying from
15 to 20 miles, and reaching its highest alt. (904 ft.)
in the vicinity of Wendover. The Chilterns were at
one time covered with forests, which were infested with
robbers, and, to protect the surrounding country from
their depredations, an officer, called the Steward of the
Chiltern Hundreds (which comprise Burnham, Des-
borough, and Stoke, in Bucks), was appointed under the
Crown. The office is now only nominal, but is retained
in order that by the acceptance of a place under the
Crown any member of Parliament may be enabled to
resign his seat.
