Cromer.—small town and coast par. with ry. sta., N. Norfolk, 20 miles N. of Norwich and 137 miles NE. of London, 1001 ac., pop. 1597; P.O., T.o., 1 Bank; has a splendid beach of firm sands, and is much frequented in the bathing season. Fishing is prosecuted, and a small coasting trade is carried on—coals, timber, tiles, oil-cake, and other goods being exported; but the encroachments of the sea, by forming shoals, render the bay so dangerous to navigation that it is called the Devils Throat. Near the cliff is a lighthouse, with revolving light 274 ft. above high water and seen 23 m. —2. Cromer, hamlet, 5 miles NE. of Stevenage, Herts.

Cromford, small market town and township with ry. sta., AVirksworth par., N. Derbyshire, on Cromford Canal, 2 miles N. of AVirksworth and 142 miles NAV. of London, 1324 ac., pop. 1074; P.O., T.O. Market-day, Saturday. The town owes its prosperity to Sir Richard Arkwright, who erected here, in 1776, the first cotton mill in the co., and the largest at that time in the kingdom. The mills are still worked by the Arkwright family, but their activity has declined to some extent during recent years. There are lead and colour works.
Cromford Canal, Derbyshire; extends E. from Crom- ford to border of Notts, and joins the Erewash Canal at Langley Mill; is 18 miles long, and rises 80 ft.
