Dalkeith Palace, adjacent, is one of the principal seats of the Duke of Buccleuch. It was erected in 1700, on the site of an old castle, the resi- dence of the Earl of Morton, from whom the estate of Dalkeith was purchased by Buccleuch in 1642.
