Dalmore.—coast vil. with pier (at Belleport, 4 mile
E.), E. Ross-shire, on Cromarty Firth, 4 mile SE. of
Alness ry. sta. and 24 miles W. of Invergordon; ex-
ports considerable quantities of timber; has a dis-
tillery, a flour-mill, and a steam saw-mill.—2. Dalmore,
seat, 14 mile SW. of Tarbolton ry. sta., Ayrshire.

Dalrliiw, lead mines, Cwm Elan valley, Radnor-
shire, near Rhayader.

Dalrlada, original kingdom of the Scots, who emi-
grated from Ireland in 506; at first it included only
Kintyre and Knapdale, but gradually it embraced the
whole of Argyllshire; it remained a separate kingdom
until 843, when Kenneth MacAlpine, king of the Dalriad
Scots, succeeded to the crown of Northern Pictland,
and removed his court from Dunstaffnage to Forteviot.

Dalruadhaln, original seat, before Dunstaffnage, of
the Dalriad kings ; its site is now occupied by the town
of Campbeltown, Kintyre, Argyllshire.

Dalrulzion, shooting-lodge, on the Black AYater,
Perthshire, 10 miles NW. of Blairgowrie.

Dairy.—town and par. with ry. sta., in co. and 174
miles NW. of Ayr, 224 SW. of Glasgow, 70 SAY.
of Edinburgh, and 393 NW. of London—par., 19,284
ac., pop. 10,215; town, pop. 5010; P.O., T.o., 3 Banks;
has woollen and worsted mills, an oil and stearine fac-
tory, &c., and is the seat of business for the great
neighbouring ironworks of Blair and Glengarnock.—

Dairy, par. and vil., Kirkcudbrightshire, 8 miles NW.
of New Galloway ry. sta.—par., 34,535 ac., pop. 988 ;
vil., pop. 603; P.O., T.O., 1 Bank; an old place, called
variously Dairy, Claughan of Dairy, and St John’s
Town of Dairy; was the starting-point of the Cove-
nanters’ rising, which ended at Bullion Green.—3.
Dairy, dist. in W. of Edinburgh.—4. Dairy, Dal-
rlgh, or Dalree (the King’s Field), 14 mile SE. of
Tyndrum sta., near W. border of Perthshire; was the
scene, in 1306, of a skirmish between Bruce and Mac-
dougal of Lorne, in which Bruce lost the Brooch of
Lorne, described in Scott’s
Lord of the Isles.

Dalryinple, par. and vil. with ry. sta., in co. and 4
miles SE. of Ayr—par., 7833ac., pop. 1362; vil. (partly
in Kirkmichael par.), pop. 305; P.O. ; limestone and
ironstone are worked; near the vil. is a bobbin factory.

Dalscotc, or Darlescote, hamlet, Pattishall par., S.
Northamptonshire, 3 miles N. of Towcester.
