Doon.—river, Ayrshire; issues from Loch Doon, on the Kirkcudbrightshire border, and flows NW., dividing the districts of Carrick and Kyle, to the Firth of Clyde If mile S. of Ayr; is 264 miles long, and is a good fish- ing stream. On Castle Island, in Lock Doon (54 miles long), is a ruined tower called Balliols Castle. Near this islet, in 1826, nine ancient canoes were found sunk in the loch.—2. Doon, hill (outmost spur of the Lam- mermuirs), in par. and 1 mile E. of Spott, Haddington- shire, alt. 582 ft.; on this hill the Scottish army lay for two days before the battle of Dunbar.
