pop. 754; vil., 4 miles SW. of Tunbridge Wells; P.O.;
in vicinity of vil. are the Eridge Rocks.

Outer Hebrides.

Eriska, island, in mouth of Loch Creran, Argyll-
shire, pop. 7.

Eriskay, island (3 miles by 1J mile), off S. coast of
South Uist island, Outer Hebrides, pop. 466 ; was the
first landing-place of Prince Charles Stuart.

Erisort, sea-loch, in E. of Lewis island, Outer
Hebrides; opens 7 miles S. of Stornoway and runs 10
miles W.; has good anchorage.

Eriswell, par., W. Suffolk, 2| miles NE. of Milden-
hall, 6620 ac., pop. 441.

Erith, town and par. with ry. sta., AV. Kent, on river
Thames, 4?,- miles E. of Woolwich and 14 miles E. of
London, 3860 ac. and 753 tidal water and foreshore,
pop. 9812 ; P.O., T.O., 1 Bank. Erith is a summer re-
sort ; it is a steamboat station, and a rendezvous of
various yacht clubs. Public pleasure-grounds skirt the
river, and on the wooded banks are many fine villas. In
vicinity are factories; also brickfields and ironworks.
In Erith church Hubert de Burgh met the Barons after
the signing of Magna Charta; Henry VIII. ’s ship, the
“ Grace de Dieu,” was built at Erith in 1515.

10,400; contains 11 pars.—2. Ermington, par. and
vil., S. Devon, on an eminence near river Erme, 2 miles
NW. of Modbury, 4952 ac., pop. 2205; P.O., T.O.

Ernan AA’atcr, rivulet, W. Aberdeenshire; flows 7
miles SE. to the Don at Inverernan.

Erncrogo, loch, Crossmichael par., Kirkcudbright.

Erne, river; rising in Lough Gowna, co. Longford,
it flows 72 miles NAV. through Lough Oughter, co.
Cavan, and Lough Erne, co. Fermanagh, into Donegal
Bay, below Ballyshannon. Lough Erne, consisting of
2 parts (Upper and Lower) joined by a strait 10 miles
long, is one of the finest in Ireland. Its entire length,
NAV. and SE., is about 40 miles, with an average
breadth of 6 miles. It is studded with many beautiful
islands, and abounds in fish. Small steamers ply upon
the lough in summer.
