Grampians, The, the great mountain system of
Scotland, stretching across the country SAY. and NE.,
and forming the natural boundary between the High-
lands and the Lowlands ; it includes several chains and
groups ; the main portion, sometimes called the Central
Grampians, extends along the border of Inverness and
Aberdeen on tbe N., and Perth and Forfar on the S.

Grampound, small market town and township (ry.
sta. Grampound Road), Greed and Probus pars., AY.
Cornwall, on river Fal, 7 miles SW. of St Austell, 199
ac., pop. 482; P.O., T.O., 1 Bank. Market-day,
Satur-
day;
was a pari. bor. until 1821; John Hampden
(1594-1643), the parliamentarian, was its representative
in 1620. The sta. is 2 miles NW. of the town, with
P.O., T.O., called Gramponnd Hoad.

Gramsdale Inn, on N. coast of Benbecula, Outer
Hebrides, Inverness-shire.

Granard.—town, Granard bar., and par., partly also
in Ardagh bar., E. co. Longford, 3 miles AY. of Bally-
willan ry. sta.—par., 18,036 ac., pop. 5308; town, pop.
1828; P.O., T.O., 2 Banks. Market-day,
Monday; its
fairs and markets are of considerable importance.—2.

Grand Canal, between Dublin and the river Shannon;
is 80 miles long, with branches 66 miles long; was
begun in 1765, and cost £1,861,008.

Grand Greve, bay, on W. side of Sark, Channel Isl.

Grand Havre, bay, on NW. coast of Guernsey,
Channel Islands, 3 miles N. of St Peter Port.

Grand Junction Canal, Northamptonshire, Bucks,
Herts, and Middlesex ; begins in Oxford Canal at
Braunston, Northamptonshire, and joins the Thames
at Brentford, Middlesex; is 90 miles long, 43 ft. wide,

5 ft. deep, and has 98 locks.

Grand Mare, or Great Marsh, on Yazon Bay, NW.
coast of Guernsey, Channel Islands ; a large forest was
destroyed here by the encroachments of the sea.

Grand Rocque, headland on W. side of Guernsey,
Channel Islands, 34 miles NW. of St Peter Port; forms
the N. extremity of Coho Bay.

Grand Surrey Canal, in the N. of Surrey; extends
from the Thames at Rotherhithe SE. to vicinity of
Deptford, thence W. to Camberwell.

Grand Trunk (or Trent and Mersey) Canal, Che-
shire, Stafford, and Derby; begins in Bridgwater Canal
at Preston Brook, Cheshire, and joins river Trent at
Cavendish Bridge, Derbyshire, is 93 miles long, and
has 91 locks.

Grand Union Canal, Leicestershire and Northamp-
tonshire ; begins in river Soar, at Aylestone, Leicester-
shire, and joins Grand Junction Canal near Welton,
Northamptonshire, is 45 miles long, and has 17 locks.

Grand Val, The, beautiful valley in N. vicinity of
St Helier, Jersey, Channel Islands.

Grand Western Canal, Devon and Somerset, from
Tiverton to Taunton ; is 23 miles long.

Grandborough.—par. and vil. with ry. sta. (Grand-
borough Road), N. Bucks, 10 miles NW. of Aylesbury,
1580 ac., pop. 300; P.O.—2. Grandborough, par. and
vil., E. Warwickshire, on river Learn, 5 miles S. of
