Holy Island (or Lindlslarnc), peninsular par., coast of N. Northumberland, 94 miles SE. of Berwick on Tweed, 2457 ac. (17 water), 328 tidal water, and 3977 foreshore, pop. 686 ; P.O.; though insulated at high tide, it is connected with the mainland by sands at low water ; is 3 miles long and If mile broad ; in the N. it consists of sand hills, which form a large rabbit warren; the remainder is fertile; on the NE. are a small harbour defended by a battery, a village fre- quented for sea-bathing, and a once famous abbey founded in 635 as a bishops see but destroyed by the Danes in 900.
Holy Island, at mouth of Lamlash Bay, Arran island, Firth of Clyde, pop. 15; is supposed to have been the resort of St Columbas disciple, St Maol Jos, whose hermitage, a natural cave, is still pointed out; is a conical hill, rising from the sea in tiers of cliffs to a height of 1030 ft.; on SAY. point is a lighthouse 56 ft. high, with fixed light (Lamlash) 46 ft. above high water and seen 12 miles.
