The co. comprises 14 bars. —Carbury, Clane, Connell, Ikeathy and Oughterany, Kilcullen, Naas (North and South), Narragh and Beban (East and West), Offaly (East and West), Salt (North and South), and Kilkea and Moone, 116 pars., and the towns of Athy, Naas, Newbridge, Maynooth, and Kildare (the capital). For parliamentary purposes the co. is divided into 2 divisions—viz., North Kildare and South Kildare, 1 member for each division. — 2. Kildare, market town, par., and capital of co. Kildare, 30 miles SW. of Dublin by rail—par., 9209 ac., pop. 2091; town, pop. 1174; P.O., T.O., 1 Bank. Market-day, Thursday. The town, which is partly the property of the Duke of Leinster, has but little trade. The ancient cathedral has been restored. There is an interesting antiquity, called the Pillar-Tower of Kildare, 108 ft. high. Near the town is the celebrated Curragh Common, where horse races are held four times a year, and on which a permanent military camp is established.
