2J miles in average breadth; the Middle, or Muck-
ross Lake, 2 miles by 1 mile, and separated from the
Lower Lake by a narrow peninsula and two islands;
and the Upper Lake, 2J miles by £ mile, the most
beautiful of the three, and connected with the Lower
and Middle Lakes by a narrow channel, known as the
Long Range, about 2J miles long. The shores and
islands are richly adorned with woods, and the arbutus
and other evergreens flourish here luxuriantly.
