of Northwich, 15 miles SW. of Manchester, and 172
NW. of London by rail—par., 4931 ac., pop. 4859;

of the township of Over Knutsford), pop. 4290;

2 Banks. Market-day, Saturday. Knutsford
(supposed to have been originally
Canutes Ford) is a
town of great antiquity ; it occupies a pleasant and
healthy situation on high ground, and contains many
fine residences of Manchester merchants. The town
possesses a grammar school, established prior to the
Eeformation. The mfrs. of cotton, worsted, and leather
goods are the chief industries. Knutsford par. contains
the townships of Nether Knutsford, 793 ac., pop.
3895, and Over Knutsford, 967 ac., pop. 410.

Kyle Khea, narrow strait, with ferry, between Skye
island and the mainland, at S. entrance to Loch Alsh.

Kyle Sku, narrow strait, with ferry, between Ed-
drachillis and Assynt pars., W. Sutherland, leading
from Loch Cairnbawn to Loch Glencoul and Loch
Glendhu; is sometimes called the Kyle of Assynt. See
Kylesku.

Kyle of Dnrness, narrow sea-loch, Durness par.,
N. Sutherland; receives river Dionard.

Kyle of Lax ford. See Laxford.

Kyle of Sutherland, uppermost reach of the Dor-
noch Firth, Boss and Cromarty and Sutherland; ex-
tends from Bonar Bridge 5 m. NW. along river Oykell.

Kyle of Tongue, narrow sea-loch, Tongue par., N.
Sutherland; receives Kinloch Water.

Kyleakin, vil., Strath par., Skye island, Inverness-
shire, on Kyle Akin, 8 miles NE. of Broadford;

; Kyleakin Ferry is the chief point of communica-
tion between Skye island and the mainland; Kyleakin
Lighthouse, on Gillean island, 1 mile N. of Kyleakin
vil., and at AV. entrance to Loch Alsh, is 70 ft. high,
with fixed light 53 ft. above high water and seen 12 m.

Kylemore, 10 miles NE. of Clifden, W. co. Galway;
P.O., T.O.; in vicinity are Kylemore Castle, seat, and
Kylemore Lough, whence a rivulet flows through a
fine mountain pass of 3 miles to the sea.

Kyles of Bnte, narrow arm of Firth of Clyde, be-
tween Bute island and Argyllshire ; is semicircular in
form, extend 16 miles from Toward Point to Ardlamont
Point, and is noted for its scenery.

Kylesku, inn and ferry, Assynt par., Sutherland,
on S. side of Kyle Sku, 14 miles NE. of Lochinver.

Kylcstrome, place with remains of fort, Eddrachillis
par., Sutherland, on N. side of Kyle Sku.
