Mclchct Park, par. and seat, Wilts, on border of
Hants, 9% miles SE. of Salisbury, 536 ac., pop. 53; on
an eminence is a Hindoo temple (1800) to the memory
of AVarren Hastings.

Melcombe Horsey, par. and seat (Meleombe Bing-
ham), Dorset, 7 miles E. of Cerne Abbas, 2151 ac., pop.
183; P.O., called Melcombe Bingham.

Devon; the Meldon Viaduct, across the AYest Okement,

Melford, Long, par. and vil. with ry. sta., Suffolk,

3 miles N. of Sudbury and 15 miles S. of Bury St Ed-

once a market town, which belonged to Bury Abbey;
Melford Hall and Melford Place are seats.

Melfort, Loeh, sea-loch, Kilninver and Kilmelford
par., Argyllshire, opposite Luing island; at NE. head
of loch is Melfort House, seat, 15 miles N. of Kil-
martin; 3 miles SW., on N. side of loch, is Melfort
Cottage, seat; N. of Melfort House, on road from
Oban to Ford, is the picturesque Pass of Melfort;
Melfort gives titles to the Earl of Perth.

Mcigaut Water, stream, AY. Forfarshire ; flows SE.
through the Loch of Lintrathen to the Isla at Airlie
Castle; has trout, and salmon ascend 2 miles to the
Loups of Kenny.

Melgnnd Castle, ruin, Aberlemno par., Forfarshire,

4 miles SW. of Brechin; said to have been built by
Cardinal Beaton ; Melgund gives the title of viscount
to the Earl of Minto.

Meliden, par. and vil., Flintshire, 4% miles NE. of
St Asaph, 2068 ac. and 509 foreshore, pop. 1137; P.O.

Melln Abbey, seat, Llanvihangel-Llantarnam par.,
Monmouthshire, on the Afon Llwyd, 3% miles N. of
Newport; was partly built out of the remains of a
Cistercian abbey.

Melincryddan, seat of copperworks, on E. side of
Neath, Glamorgan.

Melincwrt, waterfall, on river Clydach, Glamorgan,
5% miles NE. of Neath; is a fall of about 80 ft.

I this place had some importance, and at the Domesday
i survey it was held as a royal demesne. The Wilts and
j Berks Canal passes E. of the town. Saline and chaly-
beate springs are in the vicinity, but although much
has been done to give it attraction the town has never
gained special note as a watering-place. Woollen goods,
cordage, cocoa fibre, and haircloths form its mfrs.;
malting also is carried on to some extent.—2. Melk*
sham, hundred, Wilts, 21,492 ac., pop. 18,3S2; contains
6 pars, and part of another.
