nesday and Saturday. Neath is generally supposed to be
the Nidum of Antoninus. Near the town are the ruins
of a castle burnt in 1231; and about a mile SW. are the
remains of the Cistercian abbey (founded 1130) which
Leland refers to as the “ fairest abbey in 4A^rales.” To
the great mineral wealth of the surrounding country
Neath is indebted for its prosperity. Copper smelting
works, tinplate works, and chemical works, give em-
ployment to the majority of the inhabitants. Large
exports are made of the local mineral products. Neath
is one of the Swansea District of Parliamentary
Boroughs, which returns 1 member to Parliament.—2.

high water and seen 14 miles.

Needles Cave, cavern, near SW. extremity of Isle of
Wight, 4 mile SE. of The Needles.

Needles’ Eye (or The Surprise), pathway between
two rocks, 14 mile SE. of Hathersage, Derbyshire, on
the road from Sheffield to Castleton; here the road
makes a sudden turn to the right, and affords one of
the finest views in the Midland counties.
