Newt-own.—parl. bor., market town, and par., Mont-
gomeryshire, on river Severn, 74 miles SW. of Mont-
gomery and 188 from London by rail—town and par.,
2736 ac., pop. 4279; bor. (comprising Newtown par.,
and part of Llanllwchaiarn par.), 6836 ac., pop. 6974;
P.O., T.o., 2 Banks, 1 newspaper. Market-days, Tuesday
and Saturday. Tre-Newydd is the Welsh name of the
town, which is the chief seat of the Welsh flannel mfr.,
a trade which has fallen off considerably in the district,
and is being superseded by mfrs. of tweeds, shawls, &c.
Newtown is one of the Montgomery District of Parlia-
mentary Boroughs, which returns 1 member.—2. New-
