West-Riding Yorkshire, on river Wharfe, 10 miles N. of Bradford and 196% miles from London— par., 23,759 ac., pop. 17,787 ; town and township, 2370 ac., pop. 6806; P.O., T.O., 3 Banks, 1 newspaper. Market-day, Friday. Otley appears in Domesday Book as Othelia. It occupies a fine situation, and has many interesting associations. Machine-making is the prin- cipal industry; there are also worsted and leather mfrs., tanning, brick and tile making, printing, &c., and a good trade in agricultural produce.—2. Otmoor Common, large tract on E. border of Ox- fordshire, adjacent to Bucks; covers about 4000 ac., and has yielded Roman pottery and other antiquities.
Otter, river, Devon; rises on the E. end of the Black Down Hills, at the boundary with Somerset, and flows NW. past Honiton and Ottery St Mary to the English Channel at Otterton, 5 m. SW. of Sidmouth; is 24 m. long, has fine scenery, and is much frequented by anglers.
Otter Ferry, vil., Kilfinan par., Argyllshire, on E. shore of Loch Fyne, 10 miles NAV. of Tighnabruaich; P.O.; here is a ferry (1% mile broad) across Loch Fyne to Lochgilphead; Otter House, seat, is 5 miles NAV. of Tighnabruaich.
