Market-day, Saturday. Pontypool (Pont- ap-Hywel—Howells Bridge) owes its prosperity to its situation on the edge of the South Wales coal and iron basin. The greater portion of the population is em- ployed in the ironworks and tinplate works. The iron trade is of very old date, but was developed chiefly in the beginning of the 18th century by the Hanburys of Pontypool Park. The mfr. of Pontypool Japan ware, introduced in the reign of Charles II., and once exten- sively carried on, has long been transferred to other places. Pontypool is an important railway centre.
