Poole contributed four ships for the siege of Calais in
the reign of Edward III. From his time it sent 2
members to Parliament until 1868, after which it re-

river Eamont, at its efflux from Ullswater, 54 miles SW.
of Penrith; P.O., T.o.; is a boating and angling station.

Pooley Ball, old mansion, Polesworth par., War-
wickshire, near Polesworth sta. and 5 miles NW. of
Atherstone; belonged to the Marmions of Tamworth.

Poolhainpton, hamlet, 4 miles NE. of Whitchurch,
Hants.

Poolnierick, vil., Monmouthshire, in SE. of co., on
Poolmerick Brook, in par. and 14 mile SW. of Chep-
stow; the brook rises near Newchurch, and flows 7 miles
SE. to the Severn, 2 miles below the vil.

Poolnaslierry, creek, S. co. Clare, at mouth of river
Shannon, 3 miles W. of Kilrush.

Poolvasii Bay, bay, on S. coast of Isle of Man,
between Castletown and Port St Mary; it measures
34 miles across the entrance, and gives its name to a
kind of marble which is largely quarried on its shores.

Porchester (or Portchester), par. and vil. with ry.
sta., Hants, on Portsmouth harbour, 4 miles NW. of
Portsmouth, 1379 ac. land, 329 tidal water and 1430 fore-
shore, pop. 772; P.O., T.O.; is the Caer Peris of the
ancient Britons, the Portus Magnus of the Romans, and
the Portceastre of the Saxons; near the sta. is Por-
chester Castle, a ruined ancient stronghold, having in
its interior a well preserved Saxon church. Porchester
gives the title of baron to Earl of Carnarvon.
