Porthmellin, fishing hamlet and cove, on S. coast of
Cornwall, at S. extremity of Mevagissey Bay, 1 mile S.
of Mevagissey.

Porthminlcli, St Mary’s, Scilly Islands; at this place
the beach is composed of white quartz, in contrast with
the encircling rocks of red felspar.

Portholland, East and West, 2 hamlets, on S. coast
of Cornwall, on Veryan Bay, 3 miles SE. of Tregony.

Portlipean, coast vil., on St Austell Bay, Cornwall,
2 miles SE. of St Austell.

Porthqueen, hamlet and bay, on W. coast of Corn-
wall, 44 miles NE. of Padstow ;
Porthqueen Bay is a
cove or harbour, sheltered on the N. side by Kellan
Head. Good specimens of trap-dykes abound here.

NE. of Portreath and 44 miles N. of Redruth ; P.O. ;

Porthwgyr, AVelsh name of Beaumaris.

Porth-yr-Ogof (or Cwm Portli), limestone cavern,
Vale of Neath, Brecknockshire, in S. of co., near
Ystradvelltey; is traversed by river Mellte, and is 1800
ft. long, 40 ft. high, and 20 wide.

in N. of co., 4 miles SAV. of Lampeter ; P.O.

Portington and Cavil, township, Eastrington par.,
East-Riding Yorkshire, 3 miles NE. of Howden, 1236

Bridge, Sutherland, on the Kyle of Sutherland.

Portinscale, vil., Crosthwaite par., Cumberland, at
foot of Derwentwater, 1J mile W. of Keswick ; P.O.

Portisham, par. and vil. with ry. sta. (Portesham),
Dorset, in S. of co.—par., 4540 ac., pop. 705; vil., 6
miles SAV. of Dorchester; P.O.; on an eminence near
the vil. is a tower to the memory of Admiral Sir
Thomas Hardy (1769-1839), a native of the par., who
served with Nelson.

Portishead, small town and par. with ry. sta.,
Somerset, on estuary of the Severn, 10 miles AV. of
Bristol by rail, 2388 ac. (295 water), pop. 2730; P.O.,
T.O., 1 Bank. Portishead, popularly Posset, stands
under wooded hills, and has rapidly risen in favour as
a watering-place; it has a hotel, marine baths, and
many fine villas. During the season there is daily
communication by steamer with Bristol. On
Portis-
head Point
are the remains of a fort taken by Fairfax
in 1645, and traces of an ancient camp are in vicinity.

Portkinnegoc, small bay, 5 miles NE. of Moville,
NE. co. Donegal.

Portknockie, fishing vil. with ry. sta., Rathvenpar.,
Banffshire, 5 miles NE. of Buckie, pop. 1102 ; P.O.

Portland, seat, on river Shannon, N. co. Tipperary,
2 miles NE. of Portumna ; P.O.

Portland, Isle of, peninsula, in S. of Dorset, 4 miles
S. of AVeymouth and 50 miles SAV. of Southampton by
rail, 2890 ac., pop. 10,061; P.O., T.O. (at Castletown,
Easton, and Fortuneswell). Portland is 44 miles long
by 14 mile broad, is connected with the mainland by a
long narrow ridge of shingle called the Chesil Bank,
and is surrounded by high inaccessible cliffs, the only
landing-place being on the N. side, opposite to AVey-
mouth. The inhabitants are employed in agriculture,
sheep-farming, fishing, and especially quarrying, Port-
land having extensive quarries of oolitic limestone,
called Portland stone, which is widely famed as a
building stone, and is exported in large quantities.
Portland Prison, erected in 1848, has cells for 15 JO
