Powis Castle (in Welsh, Castell Coch, i.e., the Red
Castle), seat of the Earl of Powis, Montgomeryshire,

mansion (1109), situated on a commanding eminence,
and surrounded by a large park. Powis was an ancient
territory or kingdom of the Welsh, and originally ex-
tended over the Severn into the counties of Salop,
Worcester, and Hereford, to the Wye, but was curtailed
after the construction of Offas Dyke to Montgomery-
shire, and parts of Radnorshire and Brecknockshire.
