is an old town, and stands along the shore at the
foot of a hill. It sent 2 members to Parliament
from 1562 until 1832. A national school, a coastguard
station, and several chapels are here. Cables and ropes
for small craft are manufactured. St Mawes Castle
(1542) stands on a headland N. of the harbour, and is
strongly fortified.

St Michael’s Island, off E. coast of Isle of Man, at
S. side of Derby haven, and connected by a causeway
with the mainland; has ruins of a fortress and of an
ancient chapel.

St Michael’s Mount, par. and small fishing vil. with
harbour, on S. coast of Cornwall, at Mounts Bay, near
Penzance, 21 ac. and 47 foreshore, pop. 84. The mount,
which gives its name to the par., is a large granite rock,
connected with the mainland at low water by a cause-
way ; it is about 1 mile in circumference, and is sur-
mounted by a castle (6th century) which figured promi-
nently in the great Civil War. The place is of great
historical and antiquarian interest.
