St Peter Port, town and par., Guernsey, Channel Islands, on E. coast, 25 miles from St Helier, Jersey, and 108 miles from Southampton, 1499 ac., pop. 16,658; P.O., T.O., called Guernsey; 2 Banks, 7 newspapers. St Peter Port is the chief town of Guernsey, and con- tains the Court-house, the New Prison, &c. St Peters Church is said to be the finest in the Channel Islands. The harbour is extensive and commodious, occupying an area of 73 ac., and enclosing a large anchorage ground, a floating dock, building yards, a careening yard, and other conveniences for shipping. The mail steamers are able to come alongside the piers at all states of the tide. On a small rocky island close to the southern arm of the harbour is Castle Cornet, of historical interest; and % m. S. of town is Fort George, a regular fortification of con- siderable length. At St Peter Port is Elizabeth College.
