Sky Hill, Isle of Man, near Snae Fell; vestiges of an
ancient chapel, 2 forts, and some tumuli are on its sum-
mit ; here, in 1077, Goddard Crowan defeated the Manx.

Skye, island (the largest of the Inner Hebrides), Inver-
ness-shire, pop. 16,889; is separated from the main-
land of Inverness-shire by tbe Sound of Sleat (% mile
wide at the narrowest part—Kyle Rhea), measures 48
miles in length and from 3 to 25 miles in breadth, is
everywhere deeply indented by sea-lochs, and is re-
markable for the grand cliff and mountain scenery
around its coasts. The surface is nearly all moun-
tainous, rising in the Cuillin Hills to an alt. of 3234 ft.,
and much of the scenery is wildly grand and romantic.
There is a considerable number of streams and fresh-
water lochs, most of which afford abundance of trout
and salmon. The climate is very moist. The amount
of arable land is small, and lies chiefly along the sea-
board, and the greater part of it is cultivated under
the crofter system. Oats, potatoes, and turnips are
grown. There is a woollen factory at Portree. The
fisheries are of much importance, Skye combining with
Loch Carron to form one of the fishery districts of
Scotland. Skye comprises 7 pars.; Portree, which has
regular communication by steamers with Glasgow, is
the only town.

bounded N. by the Wharfe and S. by the Aire, 94,725
ac., pop. 85,900 ; contains 13 pars, and parts of 3 others.

shire, on Skyre Burn, 4 miles SW. of Gatehouse; P.O.

Skyreholme, vil., Burnsall par., N. div. West-
Riding Yorkshire, 3 miles NE. of Skipton; has the
Skyreholme Mill, paperworks.

Slack, 1% mile SAV. of Stainland, N. div. West-
Riding Yorkshire ; is the site of a Roman town and of
a Saxon royal residence.

Slad, eccl. dist. and vil., Painswick par., Gloucester-
shire—dist., pop. 1687; vil., 2 miles NE. of Stroud; has
a cloth factory.

Slade, hamlet, Nettlecombe par., Somerset, 4 miles
S. of Watchet.

Siade.—rivulet, co. Dublin; rises on Slievebane
mountain, and flows 14 miles NE. to river Liffey, near
Kilmainham.—2. Slade, fishing hamlet, 1 mile NE. of
Hook Head, S. co. AVexford.

Slade Down, on N. coast of Devon, near Ilfracombe,
alt. 666 ft.

Slade Green, hamlet, Crayford par., Kent, 2 miles
NW. of Dartford.

Slade House, seat, in W. vicinity of Cornwood sta.
and 4 miles NE. of Plympton sta., Devon ; here is the
Slade Bailway Viaduct, 103 ft. high.
