Wells, and Yeovil. It is nearly co-extensive with the
diocese of Bath and AV ells. For parliamentary pur-
poses it is divided into 7 divisions—viz., Northern,
Wells, Frome, Eastern, Southern, Bridgwater, and
Western or Wellington—1 member for each division ;
the representation was increased from 6 to 7 members
in 1885.

Somerset Court, seat, near Brent Knoll, Somerset.

Somerset House, Strand, London; was originally
built (1546) for Protector Somerset, at whose execution
(1552) it fell to the Crown, and was a royal residence
until 1775, when it was pulled down and the present
edifice erected by Sir William Chambers for the accom-
modation of various Government offices; it contains the
Registrar-General’s offices, the Exchequer and Audit
departments, the Inland Revenue office, and the Probate
and Divorce registries.

Somersham.—market town and par. with ry. sta.,

Friday. Somersham
is an old town, and was in former times celebrated for
its chalybeate springs. The church is Early English.
There is an endowed school. The trade of the place is

2 Banks. Market-day, Tuesday. The town stands on
an eminence near the river Cary, is an ancient place,
and gave name to the county of Somerset. There is an
endowed school. In addition to the weekly market,
there are several important fairs for horses, cattle,
