townshire, on Luce Bay, 2% miles S. of Glenluce.

Stalthes, market town with ry. sta., Easington par.,
North-Riding Yorkshire, on the coast, 10 miles NAV. of
Whitby;
P. o., T. O., 1 Bank. Market-day, Friday. The
town is picturesquely situated, and derives its pros-
perity from fishing. James Cook (1728-79), the navi-
gator, spent part of his boyhood here.

Stake, Hill of, on border of Ayrshire and Renfrew-
shire, 4 miles NE. of Largs, alt. 1711 ft.

Stake Pass, mountain pass, on confines of Cumber-
land and Westmorland, leading from the Langstrath
branch of Borrowdale to the Mickleden branch of
Langdale, between Stickle Pike and Rossett Crag, alt.
1576 ft.

T.O., 2 Banks. Stalbridge is an ancient place, and was
known at Domesday as Staplebridge. The church is
very old. Markets are held every alternate Monday,
and there are horse and cattle fairs twice a year.
Stone quarrying is carried on. Stalbridge gives title to
Lord Stalbridge.

par., Lancashire, on river Tame, 7% miles E. of Man-
chester by rail—mun. bor., pop. 25,977; pari, bor.,
2214 ac., pop. 42,863; 2 Banks, 2 newspapers. Mar-
ket-day,
Saturday. Stalybridge is said to derive its
name from the Staveleighs, who formerly resided here;
but the town is entirely modern, dating from the year
1776. It has communication in all directions by railway.
The principal mfrs. are the spinning of cotton yarns and
the weaving of calicoes, but there are also numerous
iron foundries and machine shops. Stalybridge was
made a mun. bor. in 1857, and a pari. bor. in 1867 ; its
municipal limits were extended in 1881, and its parlia-
mentary limits in 1885. It returns 1 member to Pari.
