Tadcaster occupies the site of the Roman Calcaria, and has yielded many Roman coins; it had anciently a castle, out of the ruins of which the handsome bridge over the Wharfe was built; it figures in history in connection with the battle of Towton (1461), and with several affairs which occurred during the Civil War. The trade is unimportant.
