Friday. The bor. (incorporated by Henry

VI.) extends into Ebony par. Tenterden is situated on
a height surrounded by hop plantations, and was at
one time only 3 miles—now it is 12 miles—from the
sea. St Mildred’s parish church, with its lofty pin¬
nacled tower—the “Tenterden steeple” proverbially
said to have been the cause of the Goodwin Sands—was
part of the monastery of St Augustine. The trade is
almost purely local.
