Uist, North, island and par., Outer Hebrides, Inver-
ness-shire—par., 75,431 ac., pop. 4264;island, pop. 3371;
P.O., T.O., at Uochuiaddy, 65 miles SW. of Stornoway ;
the par. also comprises the islands of Baleshare and
Illeray, Boveray, Grimisay, Heisker, Levera, Kirkibost,
Mhorgay, Monach, Ronay, and Yallay; the island
measures, N. and S., 17 miles in length, and from 3 to
13 miles in breadth, and consists chiefly of flat marshy
moorland, traversed by a range of hills, the greatest alt.
being 1133 ft. The coast is much indented, and the
sea-lochs abound with fish.

Uist, South, island and par., Outer Hebrides,
Inverness-shire—par., 90,099 ac., pop. 6078 ; island,
pop. 3810; P.O., T.o., at Howmore, 36 miles SW.
of Lochmaddy; the par. also comprises the islands
of Benbecula, Calvay, Eriskay, Pladda, Grimisay,
and Wiay; the island measures, N. and S., 22 miles
in extreme length, and 7| miles in extreme breadth.
The surface is flat in the N. district, while the re-
mainder is chiefly hilly or mountainous; the highest
summit, Ben More, has an alt. of 2035 ft. Black cattle
are reared, but fishing is the chief employment.

wolds, 2 miles E. of Dursley and 6 SW. of Strond, 1492

are seats; at Uley Bury, a double-ditched camp, Roman
coins have been found.

1 Bank; was founded in 1788 by the British Fishery
Society, and has a safe and spacious harbour.
