Watchet, small seaport town with ry. sta., St Decumans par., Somerset, on the Bristol Channel, I64 miles NW. of Taunton; P.O., T.O., 2 Banks. Market- day, Saturday. Watchet is an ancient place, and was called in Saxon times Wecedport. It was destroyed twice by the Danes in the 10th century, and was re- presented in Parliament in the time of Edward I. It has a tidal harbour, a pier, and a breakwater. It ex- ports iron ore and farm produce, and imports coal and timber. Ironfounding is carried on. The St Decumans papermills are at Watchet.
