Wooler, small market town and par., Northumber-
land. under the Cheviots, 9 miles SW. of Belford and
20 S. of Berwick upon Tweed—par., 4917 ac., pop.

Wooler, anciently called Willover, is in some parts ill-
built, but possesses a neat church (1765), a public
school, a dispensary, and a mechanics institute with
library and reading-room. Fairs for cattle and horses
are held in May, September, and October. Traces of
an old castle and many ancient entrenchments are in
the vicinity, the most remarkable being Humbledon
Heugh, 1 mile NAV. The pillar commemorating Earl
Percy’s victory is in the plain beneath.
