dollar of the apportionment of State tax; towns, cities and school
districts can raise larger sums by vote.
The school authority of the State is vested in a Board of Educa-
tion, consisting of the Governor, Councilors and Superintendent
of public instruction. The latter is required to hold Teacher’s In-
stitutes annually, in each county, prepare and distribute school
blanks and registers, and present an annual report to the General
Court, upon the condition and progress of the schools.
The following tables will exhibit the standing of schools in the
various cities and towns in the State.
