tain, alt. 1312 ft. The great feature of the co. is
Lough Erne, which (with the river Erne joining its
lower and upper parts) bisects the county throughout
its entire length. The loughs are studded with verdant
islands, and the whole scenery is picturesque. There is
abundance of sandstone and limestone; coal and iron
occur. The soil is only of middling quality, and there
is much bog. (For agricultural statistics, see Ap¬
pendix.) The mfr. of coarse linens is carried on. The
co. comprises 8 bars.—Clanawley, Clankelly, Coole,
Knockinny, Lurg, Magheraboy, Magherastephana, and
Tirkennedy; 23 pars.; and the town of Enniskillen.
For parliamentary purposes it is divided into 2 divisions,
viz., North Fermanagh and South Fermanagh, 1 mem¬
ber for each division.

Market-day,
Saturday. It is situated in a rich agricul¬
tural district, and has considerable trade in corn. The
military barracks are capable of accommodating about
2500 men. There are several excellent educational
institutions, among which is St Colman’s College. The
salmon fishery on the Blackwater is considered one of
the finest in Ireland.

Fern House. — seat, 4½ mile SE. of Buxton, N.
Derbyshire.—2. Fern House, seat, near SAY. border of
AVilts, 4 miles E. of Shaftesbury.

Fern Islands (or Staples), group of 17 islets and
rocks (forming a township), off coast of Northumber¬
land, separated from the mainland by a channel 1¾
mile wide, 80 ac., pop. 49; near the SW. point of
Fern Island is a lighthouse, with revolving light (Farn)
87 feet above high water and seen 15 miles; near the
NW. point is a lighthouse with fixed light (Farn) 45 feet
above high water and seen 12 miles. The Fern Islands
were the scene of the wreck of the
Forfarshire and of
the heroism of Grace Darling (1838).

Fern Tower, seat, property of Lord Abercromby, 1
mile NE. of Crieff, Perthshire; was the residence of
Sir David Baird (1.757-1829), the hero of Seringapatam.

Ferniehirst Castle, on Jed Water, 2 miles S. of
Jedburgh, Roxburghshire; ancient seat (built 1598, on
site of a castle of 15th century) of the Kerrs, ancestors
of the Marquis of Lothian.
