Nith, river; rises in SW. of New Cumnock par.,
Ayrshire, and flows 9 miles NE. to New Cumnock, and
thence 70 miles SE. through Nithsdale, Dumfriesshire,
to the Solway Firth 14 miles below the town of Dum-
fries, to which it is tidal and navigable; it divides
Dumfriesshire from Kirkcudbrightshire during the last
16 miles of its course.

Nithsdale, the western one of the 3 divisions of
Dumfriesshire drained by the river Nith; was anciently
called Stranith or Strathnith, and gave the title of earl
(1620-1716) to the family of Maxwell.
