IY. From a poor fishing village it then rose to a con-
siderable watering-place. Sheltered by tbe Downs,
which rise in the rear of the town, about 1 mile from
the sea, its temperature is well adapted to invalids,
and it possesses all the requisites of a fashionable sea-
side resort, including splendid hotels and lodgings,
baths, extensive sands, esplanade, assembly rooms, &c.
A large mackerel fishery is carried on.—2.
